‘Memorable Experience’
Jennica Roz Fronda
BSED3-4
I am Jennica, third year student, but experienced rush projects, rush requirements and the like. Despite of being lazy sometimes, I have experience challenging tasks. One of these challenging tasks is to be in front of many people, or facing a class. It is not easy to stand in front of many people, and you need to make it sure that those people will need to learn from you. Although at the end of the day, they will say something about you positively or vice versa. Having a subject who will teach us, not to teach but also to live with the students is really gift for us, because it helps us to face and solve all the coming trials and challenges we will encounter soon, when we are already in the teaching profession.
At first, knowing that Ma’am Caroline Muncal is our teacher for the subject Remedial Instruction really makes us excited and joyful, because she was our teacher during our first year, on English 105.
Actually, were expecting Ma’am Muncal to be our teacher during our second year for our one major subject but surprisingly, she is on leave during that time.
We cant hide the smile on our face that she is our teacher, because we already experienced how she taught us so many things that until now, is very useful and interesting, something that we can share to everyone, especially when we had our vowels, consonant sounds, stress and the like, knowing the real pronunciation of bamboo really makes me laugh at first but learned afterwards. There are really times we really find it hard to understand but were trying our best on it. Therefore, when we already have Ma’am Muncal in another subject, were so happy then.
On this subject, we are expected to teach, of course, but not just in front of our classmates but also in front of real students. Nervousness was the first reaction/feeling that I had when she told us that we would have the remedial class on ASTS. As our Dean says, it is just normal to feel nervous, but do not let that nervous ruin your teaching performance. Then, I already accept the fact that we really need to face our chosen profession, because it is our life, it is our choice. Then, excitement came next when we are already ask to make a letter address to the principal that we will have to conduct a remedial class for their students as a requirement for our subject. The principal already approved the letter, so we already made a test specifically for speaking, listening, reading comprehension and writing so that we can know whom the students who need remediation are. We are divided into four groups according to what is most preferred skill. Therefore, I was assign/designate to speaking, so we made test how can we measure the speaking ability of the students, so we made a questionnaire, at the same time, we had the interview for them to really measure how good can they speak and use the language.
There are students that are also good in speaking, but there really more who find it’s hard to use the language, they lack on confidence in using the language. Its seems like that they really need to learn more to use the language in a very confident way they can. We conducted the test at already 6:30 pm and everybody was now worried if we really need to go home that late, but some didn’t worry because we are almost 10 in administering the test, and we have boys in our class. Unfortunately, we didn’t pursue on the ASTS because we are risking our life going home late at night, the fact, the place was really dark when you walk all over through it, and also not all the time we are all there when we teach, so what if we are all girls and no one is a gentleman, so we cannot say what can really happen in a place that is dark. Ma’am Muncal and the class decided not to continue with ASTS because of our safety, because it is also a matter of life and death.
Disappointment was my feeling when it was cancelled because we already prepared for it, we already spend effort for it, and it’s our privilege that we are teaching real high school students. On the other hand, I have appreciated the concern of Ma’am Muncal because it is also her responsibility when something happens in us; also, she shows that she really cares. Therefore, although it is hard to leave the ASTS, we have already decided to handle another class. She has given us an option to handle her class, CED 14, for some reasons. Then, the tutorial (class) starts, headache starts to bloom, because of some more effort, more patience I need to exert for my clients. However, I ended up being satisfied because of the feeling the happiness whenever they see me, they just “Hello po” and asking for another classes, but days passed, they started to became lazy for not attending the sessions we set. Still, patience was there, it is necessary. Another class was given to us, when Ma’am Muncal asks to handle one of her classes, Noreen and I handled the CBAA class. The class seems very responsive and cooperative when we handle them and whenever I see them, even they are busy, and they just say, Hi’ Ma’am. It is very satisfactory in our part, because they learn and enjoy from us. It is a nice feeling when someone learns from you, and even we just handle him or her once, they still recognize you. It is really being a teacher, when a teacher handles one section, and for another section again, but when they have to see you, they still Hi, or approach you.
The subject overall, is truly amazing, and helps all of us in every way. It helps us to be good teacher and an effective teacher in the near future. It motivates us to be a good one. I know through this, I can faced all the challenges in a being a teacher. This third year of mine, was really hard, a lot of hard subjects, full of requirements, but also learned new ideas, experience new things to be a better teacher/individual. This was also a very blessed year, for I encountered a lots of requirements and patience for my subjects, but still God still give guides me and gives me strength. This subject was helpful, not just, because it gives us ideas how to be in the profession, but it also gives experience in this chosen profession. Though it is not easy, still I made it! It is one of a kind experience, memorable experience.
